Tenryu-ji is a major Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple in the Arashiyama district of western Kyoto, Japan, founded in 1339. It is the head temple of the Tenryu-ji branch of Rinzai Zen and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage grouping of Kyoto monuments.

The temple is best known for its historic Sogenchi garden, a landscaped pond-and-island stroll garden laid out by the Zen master Muso Soseki at the time of the temple’s founding. The garden retains its medieval plan and frames views of the surrounding Arashiyama hills.

Tenryu-ji was established under the patronage of the shogunate as a memorial temple and has been rebuilt several times following fires; the garden is the oldest surviving element of the original design. The site combines functioning temple buildings with museum displays and cloistered spaces.

The complex sits in Arashiyama, immediately west of central Kyoto, adjacent to the famous bamboo grove and near the Togetsukyo Bridge, within easy walking distance from the district’s visitor routes.

  • Foundation and UNESCO status: Founded in 1339 and designated as part of the UNESCO World Heritage property "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto."
  • Proximity to Arashiyama highlights: Adjacent to the popular Arashiyama bamboo grove and close to the Togetsukyo Bridge, making it easy to combine visits to both sights.

What to See #

  • Sogenchi Garden: A landscaped Zen stroll garden with a central pond and islands arranged around borrowed scenery; the pond and garden layout date to the temple's founding in the 14th century and were designed by Muso Soseki.
  • Main temple buildings: The main temple precinct that contains the Hatto (Dharma Hall) and other temple buildings; the current structures include multiple reconstructions dating from later centuries following fires.

Tips for Visiting Tenryū-ji #
