Tenayuca is a pre-Hispanic archaeological site in the State of Mexico, north of Mexico City, best known for its stepped pyramid complex and defensive stone enclosure. The surviving core includes a multi-tiered pyramid with twin staircases and large carved serpent-head sculptures at the lower stair bases.

The main pyramid and adjacent plazas form the principal visitor attractions; the site also preserves portions of a concentric stone wall that once encircled the ceremonial precinct. Access is typically on foot from the modern settlement that has grown around the ruins.

The visible architecture dates to the Late Postclassic period, approximately the 12th to 15th centuries CE, when Chichimec and later Mexica groups occupied the Basin of Mexico. Tenayuca functioned as a local political and ritual center and its defensive wall and monumental pyramid reflect both ceremonial and protective roles.

The site lies within the municipality of Tlalnepantla de Baz in the State of Mexico, in the urbanized belt immediately north of Mexico City, roughly 15 km from the historic center of Mexico City.

• Date and cultural affiliation: The principal construction belongs to the Late Postclassic period (roughly 12th to 15th centuries CE) and the site is associated with Chichimec and later Mexica groups in the Basin of Mexico.
• Distinctive feature: The double stairway with carved serpent heads is the site’s most distinctive feature and provides the main vantage point over the surrounding urban area.

• Main pyramid: A multi-tiered stepped pyramid that forms the site’s focal point and was rebuilt in superimposed stages during the Late Postclassic; it features twin staircases that face the main plaza.
• Serpent-head sculptures: Stone serpent-head sculptures that flank the stairways and served as prominent ritual imagery on the pyramid’s lower levels.
• Enclosing wall and plazas: The surviving concentric stone wall and adjacent plazas that mark the ceremonial and defensive layout of the settlement.

From Mexico City, take the Mexico-Texcoco road toward the State of Mexico and follow local signage for Tenayuca Archaeological Zone. Public transit options include bus lines serving northern suburbs; a car or guided tour is the most convenient.
