Carved into bedrock with a low copper dome, Temppeliaukio Church attracts tourists for its raw stone interior, acclaimed acoustics and frequent concerts-an architectural detour from Helsinki’s neoclassical centre.
Temppeliaukio Church, commonly called the Rock Church, is a Lutheran church in Helsinki excavated directly into solid bedrock and completed in 1969. The building is noted for its exposed rock interior and low, circular copper roof.
The interior shows natural bedrock walls with a round copper-clad dome and a ring of skylights; this combination produces warm acoustics and natural light. The church is frequently used for concerts as well as services and is a popular stop on city sightseeing routes.
Designed by brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen, the church was completed in 1969 after an architectural competition and construction that integrated the building into the existing rock. Its form and materials emphasise the exposed geology rather than applied ornament.
Sited in the Töölö neighbourhood of central Helsinki, the church is a short walk from major tram routes and central city attractions.

Temppeliaukio Church (Rock Church) is in the Töölö district of central Helsinki, about 1.5-2.0 km west of Helsinki Central Station - roughly a 20-25 minute walk. By car it’s about 2 km / 5-10 minutes from the station (local streets in Töölö), with short-term parking nearby.
Public transit from the city centre: take a short tram or bus ride toward Töölö and get off at the stop serving the Töölö/Temppeliaukio area, then walk a few minutes to the church. From the central station it is also an easy taxi ride of about 5-10 minutes.
