Main image

The Temple of Vespasian and Titus is a Roman imperial temple in the Roman Forum in Rome, dedicated to the deified emperors Vespasian and his son Titus. It was erected in the Flavian period as part of the imperial cult complexes that reshaped the Forum in the late first century CE.

Architectural remains include the temple’s podium and foundations set against the slope of the Forum; the building originally contained cult statues and served ceremonial and commemorative functions for the Flavian dynasty. Its visible remains today are largely sub-structural stonework integrated into the Forum landscape.

The temple was constructed in the Flavian era after the deification of Vespasian and Titus and formed part of a program of monuments celebrating the dynasty. Over subsequent centuries the structure lost decorative facing and was partially quarried and integrated into later urban fabric, leaving foundations and podium elements.

The temple sits in the central archaeological area of the Roman Forum in central Rome, between the Capitoline Hill and the Basilica Aemilia, within walking distance of the Colosseum and other major Forum monuments.

  • Viewing points: Located within the Roman Forum close to several major monuments; best viewed from the Forum pathway and from the Capitoline and Palatine elevations.

Tips for Visiting Temple of Vespasian and Titus #

  • Aim for the Forum's opening time (first entry slot) to see the Temple of Vespasian and Titus with far fewer visitors and softer morning light for photos.
  • Buy a combined Colosseum/Forum/Palatine ticket and enter the Roman Forum via the main Colosseum/Arch of Constantine entrance-it's the most direct route to the temple remains and avoids walking the longer circuit from Capitoline Hill.
  • For a quieter, elevated view many visitors miss, walk up to the Capitoline Hill (Piazza del Campidoglio) terrace to photograph the temple ruins against the city - it gives a clearer sense of the temple's podium and surviving columns than crowded ground-level shots.
