Temple Roman-era temple remains in the Umayyad Mosque compound
In Damascus’s old city the Roman Temple of Jupiter lies beneath and alongside later structures; visitors come for exposed columns and the layered archaeology where Roman, Byzantine and Islamic histories meet.
The Temple of Jupiter in Damascus was the principal Roman temple of the city, located on the acropolis area of ancient Damascus and later overlain by the Umayyad Mosque complex.
Remains of the Roman temple precinct include massive column bases, fragments of colonnades and layout traces preserved beneath and adjacent to the mosque precinct. The visible Roman elements form part of the archaeological layering that visitors see when exploring the Old City and the mosque compound.
The site was originally a pagan temple complex in the Hellenistic and Roman periods and became a Christian basilica in late antiquity. In the early 8th century the Umayyad caliphate built the present mosque over the earlier religious structures, incorporating and largely covering the Roman remains.
The site sits in the Old City of Damascus in southwestern Syria, at the historical core of the modern city and immediately adjacent to the Umayyad Mosque.
- Reused Roman fabric: Much of the Roman temple fabric was reused in later buildings; visible Roman columns and foundations are incorporated into the Umayyad Mosque complex that now occupies the site.
- Access: Access to Roman remains is through the Umayyad Mosque area in the Old City of Damascus, which sits at the site of the ancient temple precinct.
