The Temple of Earth (Ditan) is an imperial altar complex in northern Beijing established during the Ming dynasty and historically used for state sacrifices to the Earth. It dates from 1530 and forms a counterpart to the more famous Temple of Heaven.
The principal feature is the square altar area where emperors performed midsummer sacrifices; the complex also includes gates, pavilions and ritual courtyards. Today the site is set within Ditan Park, where many original ritual buildings are visible alongside modern landscaping.
The temple was built as part of the imperial system of ceremonial sites and was the focus for official rites by Ming and Qing dynasties. The surviving layout and many structures date to the Ming and later restorations.
The complex sits north of the Forbidden City in central Beijing, within Ditan Park and close to the city’s second ring road and several central districts.
