Temple of Confucius, Qufu is the principal temple dedicated to Confucius, located in his native city of Qufu in Shandong province. The site originated in the 5th century BC soon after Confucius’ life and became a large temple complex through successive additions.
The complex includes a sequence of courtyards, ceremonial halls such as the main Dacheng Hall, and numerous stone steles and memorial tablets; many visible structures date to Ming and Qing dynasty rebuilding campaigns. It is one component of the Three Confucian Sites in Qufu that together form a UNESCO World Heritage ensemble.
Historically the temple was developed and expanded by imperial patronage across centuries, serving as the principal center for Confucian ritual and memorial observances connected to the Kong family lineage.

How to Get to Temple of Confucius, Qufu #
The Temple of Confucius in Qufu lies in Qufu’s historic center. The city is served by rail - high-speed trains stop at Qufu East (Qufu Dong) station which is about a few kilometres from the old town; from Qufu East take a taxi or local bus to the city center (a taxi is typically 10-20 minutes). If you arrive at Qufu Railway Station in town, the temple complex is within walking distance of the central historic area.

- Buy the combined ticket that covers the Temple of Confucius, the Cemetery of Confucius (Kong Lin) and the Kong Family Mansion - it's more convenient and saves time compared with purchasing separate entries.
- Arrive at opening to enjoy the temple's courtyards and tall cypresses with far fewer visitors, and plan the Cemetery (Kong Lin) for later in the day when many groups move on from the main temple.
- Avoid China's public holidays (especially Golden Week and Tomb-Sweeping Day) when Qufu becomes very crowded; also spend time inside the stele collections and lesser-visited halls - they contain many of the site's most interesting inscriptions that casual visitors miss.
