The Temple of Caesar, or the Temple of Divus Iulius, is the shrine in the Roman Forum dedicated to the deified Julius Caesar. The temple occupies a prominent position within the Forum and commemorates Caesar’s elevation to divine status after his assassination.
The temple functioned as a place of cult observance for Divus Julius and formed part of the late Republican and early Imperial reworking of the Forum’s sacred and political landscape. Remains of podiums and foundations are visible among the forum ruins and are of interest to visitors studying Rome’s transformation from republic to empire.
The shrine was vowed shortly after Caesar’s assassination in 44 BCE and was officially dedicated in 29 BCE during the early Imperial period. Over the following centuries the structure underwent repairs and was integrated into the changing topography of the Forum.
