Temple of Bel
Temple Ancient Palmyra temple, central to Syrian heritage
Ancient temple at Palmyra in Syria, once a major Roman-era sanctuary combining Greco-Roman and local traditions; prior to recent conflict it formed part of extensive desert ruins.
The Temple of Bel was the principal religious building in the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria, dedicated to the god Bel and forming the centre of a large sacred precinct. The temple’s monumental form and colonnaded court made it one of Palmyra’s most important structures.
Before 2015 the complex combined Hellenistic, Roman and local architectural features and dated in visible form to the Roman Imperial period, with antecedent cult activity on the site. The temple served as a major cult centre in Palmyra for centuries.
In 2015 the monument suffered large-scale, deliberate destruction that removed much of the central cella and several surrounding buildings; fragments and foundations remain and have been the subject of documentation and conservation efforts.
The temple is located within the archaeological ruins of Palmyra in central Syria, in an oasis region north-east of Homs.
- 2015 destruction: Sustained major damage in 2015, when explosive demolition by armed groups destroyed much of the central cella and surrounding structures.
