Temple of Bacchus
Religious Site Well-preserved Roman temple at Baalbek archaeological complex
A large Roman temple at Baalbek, the Temple of Bacchus is notable for well-preserved stonework, Corinthian columns and reliefs within the broader Roman monumental complex.
The Temple of Bacchus is a large Roman temple at the archaeological complex of Baalbek in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon, built in the mid 2nd century CE. It is famous for its high degree of architectural preservation and rich decorative sculpture.
Visitors encounter a nearly complete temple cella and entrance portico set on a raised podium; the interior and exterior retain elaborate Corinthian capitals, carved reliefs and mouldings that illustrate Imperial Roman temple decoration. The temple footprint measures roughly 66 by 35 metres, making it one of the more massive surviving Roman temples.
Construction took place during the Roman imperial period as part of the major sanctuary at Heliopolis/Baalbek and the building served cult functions associated with Bacchic or imperial rites. It survived later periods largely intact and was recorded by European travellers from the Renaissance onwards.
The temple sits within the ruins of Baalbek in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley, north-east of Beirut and immediately adjacent to the larger Temple of Jupiter and other Roman monuments in the same complex.
