Temple of Baalshamin
Ruins Ancient Palmyra temple, ruined during recent conflict
An ancient temple in Palmyra dating to Roman and Nabatean times; it was largely destroyed in 2015. Archaeologists and visitors study Palmyra’s ruins for their historical importance and earlier monumental architecture.
The Temple of Baalshamin was an ancient Roman-era temple in Palmyra, Syria, dedicated to the Semitic sky god Baalshamin and noted for its classical and local architectural fusion.
Before its destruction, the temple featured monumental columns, decorated architraves and a raised podium typical of Palmyrene temple architecture and was a key stop within the broader archaeological site. It formed part of the dense cluster of temples, colonnaded streets and funerary towers that made Palmyra a major classical city site.
Constructed in the 2nd century CE and modified in later centuries, the temple combined Roman architectural elements with local decoration and ritual functions. It survived for many centuries but was deliberately destroyed in 2015 during conflict in the area; the ruins have since been subject to documentation and conservation discussion.
Located at the archaeological site of ancient Palmyra in Homs Governorate, central Syria, the temple stood within the urban grid of the classical city on the eastern edge of the Syrian desert.
- World Heritage context: Part of the ancient city of Palmyra, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site; the temple was one of the best-preserved classical-era buildings in the city before its destruction.
- Destruction and conservation: Significantly damaged and largely destroyed in 2015 during armed conflict in the area, with later archaeological documentation and discussion of potential reconstruction.
