Main image

The Temple of Athena Nike is a small Ionic temple on the Acropolis of Athens, dedicated to Athena in her aspect as bringer of victory. It dates to the fifth century BCE and is one of the smaller but architecturally refined monuments on the Acropolis.

The temple sits on a raised bastion at the southwest corner of the Acropolis platform, giving visitors a close view of sculpted parapets and reliefs that once depicted military and civic themes. It is compact in scale and notable for its elegant proportions and use of the Ionic order.

Erected during the Periclean building program in classical Athens, the temple has undergone periods of damage and restoration; fragments have been conserved and some elements reconstructed in modern times. Its sculptural decoration and position on the Acropolis reflect its religious and commemorative function in ancient Athens.

The monument is reached via the Acropolis archaeological site in central Athens, immediately adjacent to the Propylaea and other major Acropolis structures.

  • Location on Acropolis: Located on the southwestern bastion of the Acropolis, it offers close views across the city and the surrounding archaeological monuments.
