Temple E (Selinus)
Archaeological Site Ancient Greek Doric temple at Selinunte archaeological park
Inside Sicily’s Selinunte archaeological park, Temple E is a Greek Doric ruin visited for column fragments, excavated precincts and coastal views across the Mediterranean.
Temple E at Selinunte is one of those Greek Doric temples that manages to be both monumental and intimately human. Dating to the late 6th/early 5th century BCE, Temple E-sometimes identified with Hera-sits on Selinunte’s broad plateau like a deliberate act of geometry: rows of fluted columns, a long, measured cella, and a silhouette that rides the horizon. Unlike more-restored temples, Selinunte’s ruins carry the ambiguity of collapse and survival-rows of drums, battered capitals, and long shadows that stitch the site to the scrubby Sicilian landscape.
The park itself is a walk-easy at first, then generous-through a landscape of olive trees, dry stone walls and archaeological fragments. Visitors who come expecting marble white will find instead warm, honeyed stone, the pigment of a working Mediterranean. The human layer is persistent: guidebooks, local vendors selling cold water, and the occasional archeological team still piecing fragments together. Temple E asks that the visitor imagine scale and labor-not as abstract antiquity but as the real toil of quarrying, lifting and laying stone in a landscape that rarely forgives mistakes.
