Temple and Cemetery of Confucius and the Kong Family Mansion in Qufu

The Temple and Cemetery of Confucius and the Kong Family Mansion form a cultural ensemble in Qufu, Shandong, China, dedicated to Confucius and his descendants. The complex is a major centre of Confucian heritage and was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1994.

The property comprises three principal components: the Temple of Confucius, a sequence of courtyards, ceremonial halls and stone stelae; the Cemetery of Confucius, which contains the grave of Confucius and later family burials; and the Kong Family Mansion, the historic residence and administrative compound of his descendants. Together they display monumental architecture, inscriptions and ritual spaces significant to Chinese intellectual and social history.

The original memorials to Confucius date to soon after his lifetime, but the visible complex grew over many centuries with major rebuilding and expansion under successive dynasties. The Kong family served as hereditary custodians of Confucian rites and maintained the mansion and temple precincts through imperial patronage, particularly in the Ming and Qing periods.
