Tell Tayinat
Archaeological Site Ancient archaeological tell with Neo-Hittite remains
An archaeological tell in Hatay Province, Tell Tayinat preserves Bronze- and Iron-Age remains from the Amuq valley; scholars and visitors see excavated foundations and finds from early Anatolian polities.
Tell Tayinat is an archaeological tell in the Amuq plain of Hatay Province in southern Turkey, with stratified remains from the Bronze Age through the Iron Age. It is a key site for studying late Bronze and Iron Age states in the northern Levant.
Visitors to or readers about the site typically encounter remains of monumental architecture at the acropolis and evidence of a substantial lower town, including building foundations and public structures uncovered in excavations. Excavations have produced stone architectural elements, inscriptions and pottery that illustrate local urban development.
The site was occupied in the late Bronze Age and became particularly significant in the Iron Age under Neo-Hittite and related polities; archaeological work in the 20th and 21st centuries has clarified many aspects of its urban and cultic architecture. Research has included both early 20th-century surveys and more extensive modern excavations.
Tell Tayinat sits in the Amuq basin near the Orontes valley in Hatay Province, an agricultural plain that connects the Mediterranean coast with inland Anatolia and Syria.

What to See #
- Citadel (acropolis): The fortified acropolis area where monumental buildings and defensive structures were concentrated during the late Bronze and Iron Ages.
- Lower town: An extended lower settlement area with domestic and industrial remains that shows continuous occupation through Bronze and Iron Age phases.
