Tell al-‘Ubaid is an archaeological mound in Dhi Qar Governorate in southern Iraq and is the type-site for the Ubaid period of Mesopotamian prehistory. The site is central to the study of Neolithic-to-Chalcolithic cultural development in the region.
Excavations have revealed settlement layers characterized by Ubaid-style painted and incised pottery, architectural remains and material culture that illustrate early village life and technological change in southern Mesopotamia. The site is referenced widely in archaeological literature as the namesake of the Ubaid cultural horizon.
Studied by archaeologists in the early 20th century, the discoveries at Tell al-‘Ubaid helped define a broad prehistoric cultural phase that predates the rise of city-states in Mesopotamia. The sequence at the tell demonstrates long-term occupation and changing settlement patterns.
The tell is located in southern Iraq’s Dhi Qar region, in the alluvial plain associated with ancient Mesopotamian river systems and not far from the ancient city of Ur.

Tell al-‘Ubaid lies in southern Iraq’s Dhi Qar Governorate, roughly 10-20 km east of the modern city of al-Qadisiyah/near the ancient marsh fringe. Access is by road from Nasiriyah (about a 1-1.5 hour drive depending on exact approach); four-wheel drive may be required for the last few kilometers. Visitors must coordinate with Iraqi antiquities authorities and local security; independent access is not recommended due to the region’s sensitivity.
