Tel Megiddo
Archaeological Site Ancient archaeological mound with extensive biblical-era ruins
An archaeological tell in Israel’s Jezreel Valley, Megiddo draws visitors for layered Bronze-to-Iron Age ruins, an on-site museum, and wide views over the valley. Pilgrims and history buffs come for excavation trenches, stone foundations, and links to biblical and Near Eastern history.
Tel Megiddo is an archaeological mound (tell) on the northwestern edge of the Jezreel Valley in northern Israel, known for its long sequence of occupation and strategic location. It is one of the region’s best-studied multi-period tells and is recognized for its contributions to understanding Bronze- and Iron-Age urbanism.
Excavated areas reveal many well-preserved features including monumental gate complexes, defensive walls, large public and administrative buildings and an engineered water system that tapped springs below the tell. The site’s deep stratigraphy records settlement continuity and rebuilding across several millennia, making it important for study and for public interpretation.
Archaeological work at Megiddo began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and has continued in various campaigns since then, exposing layers from prehistoric occupation through Canaanite, Israelite and later periods. Finds and stratigraphic sequences from the tell have been central to debates about ancient Near Eastern chronology and urban development.
Tel Megiddo sits on a strategic hill overlooking the Jezreel Valley, adjacent to the modern village and kibbutz that share its name and near major road corridors in Israel’s Northern District. The tell is accessed from regional highways and serves as a prominent archaeological park in the area.
- UNESCO status: Inscribed as part of the UNESCO serial property "Biblical Tels - Megiddo, Hazor, Beer‑Sheba" for its archaeological significance and preservation of multiple occupational layers.
- Visitor highlights: Most accessible viewing and interpretation concentrate on the exposed gate complexes and the restored route down to the ancient water system, which are central to the on-site trail network.
What to See #
- Stratified urban mound: The tell contains multiple successive urban layers from the Neolithic through the Iron Age, including well-preserved streets, foundations and storage areas revealing long-term habitation and rebuilding.
- Water system: A large water system and spring access structure that provided a secure water supply to the ancient settlement and is a key exposed feature for visitors.
- Gates and fortifications: Remains of monumental gates, fortification walls and administrative buildings from Bronze- and Iron-Age levels that illustrate ancient defensive architecture and urban planning.
