Tegernsee is an alpine lake in Bavaria, Germany, known for its scenic lakeside towns and role as a regional leisure and spa destination.

The lake is ringed by towns and promenades offering boating, lakeside walks and hillside hiking routes. Visitors use the lake for pleasure boating, bathing in summer and as a base for walking and cycling in the surrounding foothills.

Towns around the lake grew up around monastic and market centres in the medieval period and later developed as 19th- and 20th-century leisure destinations. The area has long attracted visitors from Munich and Bavaria for recreation and health tourism.

Set in the Bavarian Prealps of southern Bavaria, the lake lies within easy reach of Munich and other Bavarian cities and is surrounded by rolling hills and the lower slopes of the Alps.

  • Shore towns: Towns of Tegernsee and Rottach-Egern on the lake's shores provide boat services, hotels and lakeside promenades popular with day-trippers from Munich.
  • Best time to visit: Best visited outside peak summer weekends for quieter walking routes around the 8 km shoreline path and lake promenades.

How to Get to Tegernsee (lake) #

Tegernsee (the lake and town) is in Bavaria, about 50 km south of Munich. From München Hauptbahnhof take the Bayerische Oberlandbahn (BOB) regional train direct to Tegernsee station (journey about 1 hour); the lakeshore and town center are then a 5-10 minute walk from the station. By car it’s roughly 50 km via the A8 and local B-roads (about a 1‑hour drive, depending on traffic).

Tips for Visiting Tegernsee (lake) #

  • Take the regional train to Tegernsee station rather than driving in high season-public transport from Munich and nearby towns avoids limited parking and the busiest afternoon crowds.
  • Visit early morning or later in the afternoon to enjoy quieter stretches of shoreline and better photographic light; mid-afternoon on sunny weekends is when day-trippers converge.
  • Use the regular passenger boats from Tegernsee and Rottach‑Egern to sample different lakeside towns-many visitors limit themselves to one shore and miss the variety of smaller villages accessible by ferry.
