Teberda Nature Reserve is a protected area in Karachay-Cherkessia in the North Caucasus of southern Russia that protects mountain valleys, alpine meadows, forests and glacial landforms. It conserves a range of mountain habitats and supports populations of regional wildlife.
The reserve contains deep river valleys, steep mountain slopes and subalpine and alpine zones; it is used for scientific research and regulated nature tourism. Nearby Dombay serves as the principal access and visitor base for much of the reserve’s recreational use.
The protected area was established in the 20th century as part of Soviet-era conservation measures and has continued under Russian protected-area management to safeguard the Caucasus high-mountain environment.
Geographically the reserve lies in the Teberda River valley and adjacent ranges within Karachay-Cherkessia, with established road and visitor links to the resort settlements near the reserve’s perimeter.

How to Get to Teberda Nature Reserve #
The reserve is accessed via the Karachay-Cherkessia region. The nearest town with significant transport links is Karachayevsk (road connections) and regional airports in Nalchik or Mineralnye Vody; from there road transfer to Dombay (approx. 2-3 hours) is typical. Local buses and private minibuses run in summer.
Tips for Visiting Teberda Nature Reserve #
- Hire a local guide to move safely through glacial valleys and to access lesser-known alpine meadows.
- Many of the better trails start from Dombay village; arrive early to beat private minibus tourist traffic.
- Winter conditions are avalanche-prone - only travel with mountain guides and proper equipment.

Teberda is best explored in summer for hiking and in winter only with qualified guides for skiing and mountaineering.
