Teatro di San Carlo

Teatro di San Carlo in Naples is an 18th-century opera house and one of the oldest continuously active opera theatres in the world, originally opened in 1737. It has long been a principal venue for Italian opera and ballet.

The theatre’s interior features a traditional horseshoe-shaped auditorium with multiple tiers of boxes and a capacity in the low thousands, designed for strong acoustic performance and visibility. The house also includes prominent ceremonial boxes and richly decorated foyers that reflect 18th and 19th century Neapolitan theatre architecture.

Commissioned by King Charles VII of Naples, the original building opened in 1737; it was damaged by a fire in 1816 and rebuilt soon after under architect Antonio Niccolini. The theatre has undergone subsequent restorations and continued to host premieres and performances across opera, ballet and orchestral repertoire.

Located in central Naples within the historic city fabric, the theatre sits close to the Piazza del Plebiscito and other major civic landmarks, making it accessible on foot from the city centre.
