Tayrona National Natural Park is a protected coastal national park on Colombia’s Caribbean coast in Magdalena Department, known for its combination of tropical rainforest and coastal beaches. It is one of Colombia’s best-known coastal natural areas, valued for biodiversity and scenic shoreline.

Several small beaches and coves are linked by walking trails that run between access points and campsites; popular stops include Cabo San Juan, which has a shelter and camping area. Wildlife viewing, swimming in sheltered bays and short coastal hikes along trails of a few kilometers are common activities.

The area encompasses coastal and inland environments that preserve both natural habitats and archaeological remains of pre-Columbian peoples. Over time the zone has been managed as a protected area to conserve ecosystems and cultural sites while allowing regulated visitor access.

The park lies on the northern Caribbean coast of Colombia, northeast of the city of Santa Marta, where the coastal strip meets the foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. Access is by road from nearby towns and then on foot from the park entrances on the coast.

  • Park access: Entry to the park is regulated and entrances close at night; plan hikes and returns within daylight hours.
  • Trail conditions: Coastal trails include steep and sandy sections; water, sun protection and sturdy footwear are recommended.

What to See #

  • Cabo San Juan: A popular coastal trail system linking a series of beaches, coves and small bays; the most visited beach is Cabo San Juan, reached by foot along marked paths from park entrances.
  • Pueblito Chairama: Pre-Columbian Tayrona archaeological site with stone terraces and circular foundations located inland from the main coastal trails; access is by foot on designated trails and guided walks.

How to Get to Tayrona National Natural Park #

Tayrona National Natural Park is accessed from the city of Santa Marta on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. From Santa Marta, frequent minibuses/collectivos and local buses run to the park’s main entrance at El Zaino; the road transfer from Santa Marta to El Zaino typically takes about 45-60 minutes. From the park entrance you then hike along marked trails (varying distances depending on which beach/sector you plan to visit).

Many visitors combine a Santa Marta stay with a boat or guided hike into the park’s coastal sectors; check schedules and park entrance information before travel.

Tips for Visiting Tayrona National Natural Park #

  • Enter the park via the El Zaino entrance (the main access point from Santa Marta) and start your hike early in the morning to reach popular beaches like Cabo San Juan before day‑trippers arrive.
  • If you plan to stay overnight at Cabo San Juan, reserve camping or hammock spots well in advance; accommodation at the beach is limited and day visitors greatly outnumber overnight guests.
  • Avoid Colombian holiday weekends if you want quieter trails - those dates bring large domestic crowds; consider exploring less-visited trails toward Arrecifes and Playa Brava for quieter swimming and snorkeling.
