Taymouth Castle
Castle Historic Scottish castle and former noble residence
On the shores of Loch Tay, Taymouth Castle is a 19th‑century country house estate; visitors come for guided walks, loch scenery and the castle’s period architecture when the grounds are accessible.
Taymouth Castle is a large country house and estate on the northern shore of Loch Tay in Perthshire, Scotland, built in the 19th century on the site of earlier fortifications. The present castellated house was developed for the Campbell family, the Marquesses of Breadalbane, and forms the centrepiece of a historic Highland estate.
The building and extensive grounds are the site’s main draws, with formal and parkland landscapes arranged to take advantage of views across Loch Tay. The estate historically included designed gardens, woodland and estate roads that shaped visitor access.
An earlier medieval stronghold existed on the site; the 19th-century rebuilding produced the large Gothic-revival mansion that stands today and that has been used variously as a private residence, institutional facility and at times proposed for redevelopment.
Taymouth Castle sits adjacent to the village of Kenmore on the shores of Loch Tay in Perth and Kinross, in the Scottish Highlands. The immediate locality is rural, with the nearest sizable towns and transport links a drive from the loch-side village.
- Setting: The castle stands on elevated grounds overlooking Loch Tay and the surrounding Perthshire hills, making its setting one of the estate's principal attractions.
