Archaeological Site Ancient Gandharan archaeological site with Buddhist ruins
Near Islamabad, Taxila contains archaeological sites and museums from the Gandhara period: stupas, monasteries and sculptural remains that document Hellenistic-Buddhist exchange.
Taxila is an archaeological region in Punjab near Islamabad that contains ruins and monuments from several successive cultures, notably the Gandhara civilization. The site preserves urban remains, monasteries and stupas that span many centuries of occupation.
Visitors can follow defined trails to multiple excavated sites, including planned settlements, Buddhist monastic complexes and large stupa enclosures, plus a museum that displays sculptures, coins and other finds. The material on display documents cultural exchanges across South and Central Asia.
Excavations at Taxila began in the early 20th century under British archaeological teams and continued in subsequent decades; the site is recognized for its role in Gandharan art and as a regional hub on ancient trade and pilgrimage routes. It is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Taxila lies in the Punjab province of Pakistan, within driving distance of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, and is presented to visitors via marked archaeological zones and an on‑site museum.

- Jaulian: Jaulian is a monastic complex and stupa site with sculptural remains and monk's cells dating to the later Buddhist period.
- Dharmarajika Stupa: Dharmarajika is a large stupa complex associated with early Buddhist devotional practice and visible remains of ceremonial architecture.
- Taxila Museum: The Taxila Museum houses many of the finds from excavations, including Gandharan sculptures, coins and inscriptions.
How to Get to Taxila #
Taxila is northwest of Islamabad and is reached easily by road from the capital: take the Grand Trunk Road (GT Road/N-5) or the M-1 corridor toward Taxila. The site is a short drive from Islamabad (roughly a 30-40 km trip depending on start point) and is also served by local trains and buses to Taxila railway/cantonment stations; from those stations the museum and archaeological sites are a short taxi ride away.
Tips for Visiting Taxila #
- Start at the Taxila Museum to get a clear overview of the artifacts, then visit the dispersed sites (Sirkap, Jaulian, Dharmarajika) - the archaeological area is spread out, so plan local transport in advance.
- Arrive early in the day to avoid heat and to see key monuments with fewer visitors; take a local guide from the museum/entrance who can point out the subtle features and chronology that most self-guided visitors miss.
- Allow time to move between the individual sites rather than squeezing everything into one short visit - each site (Sirkap's city plan, Jaulian's monasteries, Dharmarajika's stupas) rewards a focused walk.
