Tawang Monastery
Religious Site Largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in India’s Tawang region
High on a Himalayan ridge, Tawang Monastery is one of India’s largest Tibetan Buddhist monasteries; visitors come for monastic ritual, Tibetan-style architecture, annual festivals and expansive mountain views near the Tibetan border.
Tawang Monastery is a large 17th-century Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Tawang district in the western Himalaya, and is one of the largest monasteries in India. It was founded in the late 17th century and remains an active center of Gelugpa Buddhist practice.
The complex contains multi-level assembly halls with large thangka paintings and statues, prayer rooms, and monastic living quarters; it houses several hundred monks and functions as a religious and cultural center. Visitors come to view the main dukhang, the monasterys collection of ritual objects, and panoramic views from the hilltop site.
The monastery was established in the late 1600s by a Tibetan lama and has been a continuous religious institution since that time, surviving periods of political change while retaining its monastic traditions. It has undergone repair and renovation at various times to maintain its buildings and art.
Tawang Monastery sits on a ridge in the Tawang district near the India-China border in the eastern Himalaya, at about 3,000 metres above sea level. The site is reached via mountain roads from the surrounding valleys and is remote from major metropolitan centers.
- High-altitude access: Founded in the 17th century and situated at roughly 3,000 metres elevation, weather and road conditions can limit access in winter and early spring.
