Tatra National Park (Tatrzański Park Narodowy) protects the Polish side of the High Tatras, a compact alpine range on the border with Slovakia, and conserves high-mountain ecosystems and popular hiking areas.
The Polish national park was created to protect the unique flora, fauna and landscapes of the High Tatras and has been managed with conservation and visitor infrastructure since the mid-20th century. Cross-border cooperation with Slovak authorities coordinates conservation across the Tatra range.
The park occupies the highest part of the Tatra Mountains in southern Poland, with main gateways from the towns of Zakopane and nearby mountain settlements; it borders the Slovak Tatra National Park to the south.
- Transboundary protection: The park protects the Polish side of the High Tatras and includes alpine peaks, mountain lakes and glacial valleys; border trails link with the Slovak Tatra National Park.
- Highest peak: Rysy reaches 2,503 metres and is the highest point in Poland, accessible from established mountain trails that require proper footwear and weather preparation.

- Morskie Oko: Morskie Oko, a large alpine lake in the High Tatras that is one of the park's most-visited sights and reached by a maintained mountain trail.
- Rysy (peak): Rysy, a peak on the Polish-Slovak border that includes the highest point in Poland and is a popular route for experienced hikers.
- Kasprowy Wierch (access area): Kasprowy Wierch area with a cable car and established routes used to access high alpine ridges and viewpoints within the park.
How to Get to Tatra National Park #
Tatra National Park (Poland) is accessed from Zakopane (southern Poland) for the main Polish trails and villages like Palenica Białczańska for Morskie Oko. Zakopane is about 2-2.5 hours by car or bus from Kraków; regular regional buses run the route. Trains go to nearby towns, with transfers by bus or taxi to trailheads.
Tips for Visiting Tatra National Park #
- If hiking, start early from Zakopane for popular Tatra trails to avoid afternoon storms and crowds.
- Use mountain huts (schroniska) for staging longer treks - they provide food and basic lodging and are integral to classic Tatra routes.
- Check weather and trail conditions at park ranger stations before setting out; mountain weather changes rapidly and some trails close in snow or storms.
Best Time to Visit Tatra National Park #
Best visited in summer for hiking and in autumn for colours; winter is for experienced mountaineers only unless using guided services.
