Tatra National Park (Tatrzański Park Narodowy) protects the Polish side of the High Tatras, a compact alpine range on the border with Slovakia, and conserves high-mountain ecosystems and popular hiking areas.

The Polish national park was created to protect the unique flora, fauna and landscapes of the High Tatras and has been managed with conservation and visitor infrastructure since the mid-20th century. Cross-border cooperation with Slovak authorities coordinates conservation across the Tatra range.

The park occupies the highest part of the Tatra Mountains in southern Poland, with main gateways from the towns of Zakopane and nearby mountain settlements; it borders the Slovak Tatra National Park to the south.

  • Transboundary protection: The park protects the Polish side of the High Tatras and includes alpine peaks, mountain lakes and glacial valleys; border trails link with the Slovak Tatra National Park.
  • Highest peak: Rysy reaches 2,503 metres and is the highest point in Poland, accessible from established mountain trails that require proper footwear and weather preparation.

What to See #

  • Morskie Oko: Morskie Oko, a large alpine lake in the High Tatras that is one of the park's most-visited sights and reached by a maintained mountain trail.
  • Rysy (peak): Rysy, a peak on the Polish-Slovak border that includes the highest point in Poland and is a popular route for experienced hikers.
  • Kasprowy Wierch (access area): Kasprowy Wierch area with a cable car and established routes used to access high alpine ridges and viewpoints within the park.

Tips for Visiting Tatra National Park #

  • If hiking, start early from Zakopane for popular Tatra trails to avoid afternoon storms and crowds.
