Main image

Tatihou is a small tidal island off the eastern Cotentin coast of Normandy, adjacent to the fishing port of Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue. The island is noted for its maritime museum and a 17th-century fortification that forms part of the Vauban-era coastal defenses.

The island’s main visitor highlights are the fortress and the maritime museum concentrated near the landing area. Short walks across flat, grassy terrain offer views across the bay to the Cherbourg peninsula and the coastline of Manche.

The island’s fortifications were constructed in the early modern period as part of coastal defenses; the present masonry works date to the 17th century and later modifications. Over time the island shifted from military use to cultural and natural heritage functions, with museum displays added in the 20th century.

Tatihou sits a few hundred metres off the harbour of Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue on the northeastern Cotentin peninsula, in Manche, Normandy. The island is reachable by boat from the town; the nearest sizeable port city is Cherbourg to the northwest.

  • Access: The island is tidal and boat access is seasonal; regular shuttle boats run from the harbour at Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue during the visitor season.
  • UNESCO connection: Part of the Vauban fortifications recognised by UNESCO, making its fort and surrounding harbour an item of international historic interest.

What to See #

  • Fort de Tatihou: A 17th-century sea fortification standing on the island's windward side, part of the defensive works associated with Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue and included in Vauban-related UNESCO listings.
  • Maritime museum: A small maritime museum interpreting local fishing, navigation and the island's maritime history, with exhibits arranged in historic buildings close to the landing area.
