Tate's Cairn
Mountain Hong Kong hill overlooking Sha Tin and major tunnel
Ridge and hill in Hong Kong’s New Territories crossed by the Tate’s Cairn Tunnel; hikers use local paths for short climbs and panoramic views toward Kowloon and the harbour.
Tate’s Cairn is a prominent hill in Hong Kong’s Sha Tin District, forming part of the ridge-line east of the Kowloon urban area. The hill gives its name to major transport infrastructure in the area.
Hikers use trails to reach the summit and ridge viewpoints, which offer views over Sha Tin, Ma On Shan and parts of Kowloon when visibility is good. The slopes are vegetated with mixed woodland typical of Hong Kong’s mid-elevation hills.
The hill’s name entered wider public use with the construction of nearby road and tunnel infrastructure that adopted the same name to identify the route. The surrounding area has developed rapidly while the hill itself remains a local green space.
Tate’s Cairn sits in the eastern New Territories within Sha Tin District, on the ridge between Sha Tin and Ma On Shan and north-east of the main Kowloon urban area.
- Elevation and views: The hill's summit sits at roughly 570-580 metres above sea level and provides panoramic views across parts of the New Territories and urban Kowloon on clear days.
- Transport link: The nearby tunnel and transport infrastructure are named for the hill and are commonly used commuter routes linking Sha Tin with southern districts.
What to See #
- Tate's Cairn Tunnel: A major traffic tunnel that takes its name from the hill and is a key part of the regional road network linking the New Territories and Kowloon.
How to Get to Tate's Cairn #
From Sha Tin town centre: take a taxi or local bus toward Tate’s Cairn Road and begin the ridge walk from the paths behind Sha Tin Racecourse. Many trails connect to the MacLehose/Wilson trail networks; follow trailhead signs for short hikes. From Kowloon, buses that use Tate’s Cairn Road (check local bus routes) will put walkers close to the lower trailheads.
Tips for Visiting Tate's Cairn #
- Approach from Sha Tin rather than the busy Kowloon side - the ridgeline walk from Sha Tin Racecourse takes you straight into quieter paths.
- Bring binoculars for the view: on a clear day the skyline of Kowloon and distant Lantau contours are visible.
- If attempting a ridge hike, start early to avoid mid-afternoon heat and crossover traffic noise from nearby roads and tunnels.
