Tash Rabat

Tash Rabat is a well-preserved medieval stone caravanserai located in the mountains of Naryn Region, Kyrgyzstan, often dated to around the 15th century. It is a distinctive circular-plan stone structure that served as a roadside inn for traders on Central Asian routes.

The caravanserai’s solid masonry ring of rooms around a central courtyard is the main attraction; its compact, enclosed form and vaulted chambers are notable examples of caravanserai architecture. Visitors typically inspect the interior cells, the vaulted passageways and the surrounding mountain landscape, and many itineraries include overnight camping nearby.

Scholarly opinion places the building in the late medieval period and identifies its function as a roadside inn for Silk Road-era traders and their animals. Over time the structure has been conserved and stabilized and is presented today as an archaeological and tourist site rather than an active inn.

Tash Rabat sits in a remote upland valley in Naryn Region, on the slopes of the At-Bashi/Torugart area of central Kyrgyzstan. The site is accessed from the regional road network with the nearest towns several hours away by vehicle.
