Tarot Garden

The Giardino dei Tarocchi (Tarot Garden) is a sculpture park in Tuscany created by artist Niki de Saint Phalle, composed of large, colorful, mosaic-covered figures inspired by the tarot’s Major Arcana. Work on the garden began in 1979 and continued into the late 1990s, with the artist and a team building monumental, walk-through sculptures.

The park’s principal attractions are its series of oversized sculptural installations that visitors can enter and move around; the works combine ceramics, mirror fragments, and painted surfaces and vary in height. Pathways connect the sculptures across the garden and the site is intentionally experiential, combining architecture, sculpture, and landscape.

Niki de Saint Phalle oversaw the design and execution of the garden over two decades, collaborating with craftsmen and other artists. The project was inspired by Antoni Gaudí’s Parc Güell and meant as a personal artistic environment that blends symbolic iconography with large-scale public art.

Situated inland from the Tyrrhenian coast near Capalbio in southern Tuscany, the garden occupies a hillside plot with views toward the Maremma landscape. The site is reached by local roads and is a short drive from coastal towns in southern Tuscany.
