Main image

Taransay is an uninhabited island in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, noted for its machair grasslands, sandy beaches and abandoned crofting settlement.

The island offers a mix of coastal scenery, dunes and the remains of small stone dwellings and field systems; it is also valued for seabird habitat and wild coastal landscapes. Day visits are typically made by private or charter boat and there are no visitor facilities on the island.

Taransay was inhabited for centuries under the Scottish crofting system but its permanent population left during the 20th century; it received international attention when used as the location for a UK television programme in 2000. Many of the ruined township structures remain visible across the island.

Geographically it lies off the west coast of Harris in the Outer Hebrides, within the Atlantic island group of northwest Scotland, and is reached from nearby inhabited islands and harbours.

  • Television history: Used as the location for the BBC reality series "Castaway 2000", which brought renewed attention to the island.
  • Access: Uninhabited since the 20th century and reached mainly by private boat or organized excursions from nearby islands.
