Tara National Park
National Park Carpathian-Balkan mountain park with dense forests
A mountainous park in western Serbia, Tara National Park offers dense forests, river canyons and hiking trails; visitors come for wildlife watching, rafting on the Drina and timber-frame lodges.
Tara National Park is a protected mountainous area on Tara Mountain in western Serbia, established to conserve the region’s forests and river canyons. It is known nationally for its extensive forest cover and scenic river valleys.
Dense mixed beech and conifer forests, high karst plateaus and deep valleys overlooking the Drina River are primary attractions. Several viewpoints and short trail networks provide access to panoramic sections of the Drina canyon and wildlife observation, with Mitrovac serving as a local visitor hub.
The park was designated to protect the mountain ecosystem and freshwater resources; formal protection began in 1981. Since designation, the area has been managed for conservation, recreation and traditional pastoral uses.
Tara National Park lies in western Central Serbia near the town of Bajina Bašta, along the Drina River which forms the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is roughly a few hours’ drive southwest of Belgrade and occupies rugged, forested terrain at mid to high elevations.
- Flora and seasonality: The park is a stronghold for mixed beech and conifer forests including populations of the native Serbian spruce; spring through autumn offers the best hiking conditions.
- Viewpoint and access: Banjska Stena provides the clearest long-distance views into the Drina canyon and is reached by short walks from the Mitrovac area.
What to See #
- Banjska Stena viewpoint: A high rocky viewpoint that overlooks a long bend of the Drina River and is one of the park's most photographed panoramas.
- Mitrovac: A small tourist settlement with a visitor centre, accommodation and access to marked trails and picnic areas on the plateau.
