Main image

Tantallon Castle is a mid-14th-century cliff-top fortress in East Lothian, Scotland, built as a stronghold of the Douglas family and now preserved as a dramatic ruin. It occupies a commanding position overlooking the Firth of Forth.

The surviving semicircular curtain wall and gatehouse dominate the ruin and provide clear examples of medieval defensive design. Cliff-top walks around the site give expansive views toward the Bass Rock and across the Firth of Forth, while interior ruins reveal the footprint of the keep and service ranges.

Constructed in the mid-1300s by the Douglas family as a fortified noble residence, the castle saw sieges and use in later Scottish conflicts and declined after artillery damage in the 17th century. It has since been conserved as a historic ruin and is interpreted for the public.

Perched on a promontory near North Berwick in East Lothian, the castle overlooks the Firth of Forth and faces several offshore islands. It is reachable from coastal roads east of Edinburgh and is commonly visited from towns along the East Lothian coast.

  • Site conditions: The castle stands on a sea cliff and is exposed to coastal winds; sturdy footwear is recommended for uneven ground and cliff-edge paths.
  • Management and access: Owned and managed as a historic ruin; the site is open to the public with interpretation available on-site and in nearby visitor centres in East Lothian.

What to See #

  • Curtain wall and gatehouse: The great semicircular curtain wall and gatehouse that define the surviving frontal defense and give views across the Firth of Forth toward offshore features.
  • Keep and inner bailey: A ruined central keep and inner courtyard area containing fragments of domestic ranges and service buildings from the medieval period.
  • Coastal viewpoints: Cliff-top walkways and viewpoints offering sightlines to nearby islands such as the Bass Rock and coastal vistas used historically for defense and observation.
