Tanjung Piai National Park
National Park Coastal park marking mainland Asia's southernmost point
Malaysia’s Tanjung Piai marks mainland Asia’s southern tip and protects mangrove forests; tourists come for boardwalks, mangrove ecology, birdwatching and the distance-marker monument.
Tanjung Piai National Park is a protected mangrove area at the southwestern tip of Peninsular Malaysia in Johor state, noted for containing the southernmost point of mainland Asia.
Visitors use boardwalks and trails to explore mangrove forests, view shorebirds and estuarine wildlife, and reach an observation platform and a monument marking the continental southern tip. The park is compact and focused on coastal and mangrove ecosystems rather than long-distance trekking or highland habitats.
The area was set aside to conserve coastal mangroves and the intertidal environment that supports local fisheries and birdlife; protection has also promoted ecotourism and educational visits focused on mangrove ecology. Management emphasizes boardwalk access to minimize impact on swampy areas.
The park lies on the southwestern coastline of Johor, near the mouth of several estuaries and close to coastal towns such as Pontian and Kukup, and is accessible by road from regional centres in southern Johor.
- Southernmost point: The site contains a marked point commonly described as the southernmost tip of continental Asia and is a frequent photo stop for visitors to the Malay Peninsula.
- Wildlife viewing times: Mangrove habitats support shorebirds and small estuarine wildlife; low tide and sunset are popular times for wildlife viewing and photography.
