Tanintharyi Division Travel Guide
The Tanintharyi Division is a large area in the south of Myanmar and borders Thailand, Mon State and the Andaman Sea. Myanmar boasts 1,000 islands and more than 800 are in Tanintharyi. Dawei is the capital of the division and the whole region covers 16,735 square miles.
Tanintharyi Division is full of natural resources, from metals in the mines to pearls from the aptly named Pearl Island. The region also produces rice, coconut, rubber, betel nut and dhani. The Salone tribes hold annual festivals in the Myeik archipelago where there is also great diving.
Kawthaung is in the Tanintharyi Division and is the check point entrance from neighboring Thailand. Dawei is a pleasant area and the whole region is full with friendly locals who serve delicious dishes of cheap food in the many restaurants that can be found everywhere.
Getting There & Away
Tanintharyi Division is connected to the rest of the country by a decent road system and the buses and taxis can use the majority of the roads in the area year round. Yangon to Dawei is 450 miles and buses along this route take 24 hours to reach Dawei. A flight from Yangon (the nearest airport) to Tanintharyi Division only takes 50 minutes.
