Tanbaly
Archaeological Site Open-air archaeological site with ancient petroglyphs
An open-air petroglyph site in Kazakhstan’s Almaty Region with Bronze Age rock carvings. Visitors study thousands of engravings, walk canyon tracks and visit the on-site interpretive centre that explains the imagery and chronology.
Tanbaly (Tamgaly) is an archaeological landscape in Kazakhstan’s Almaty Region notable for large concentrations of rock engravings. The site contains thousands of petroglyphs that illustrate ritual scenes, animals and solar symbols made across many prehistoric and historic periods.
The main attraction is the engraved rock panels grouped on open ridges and river terraces, showing motifs ranging from Bronze Age pastoral scenes to later horsemen and ritual imagery. The density and chronological span of the petroglyphs make the site an important record of steppe cultures.
Scholarly work has shown the panels were produced and reused over many centuries by different cultural groups who passed through or occupied the area. Conservation and documentation efforts have focused on recording the petroglyphs and protecting them from erosion and human damage.
The site lies in the steppe and upland landscape of southeastern Kazakhstan, in the vicinity of river valleys and seasonal watercourses that attracted prehistoric pastoralists. It is accessible from Almaty and regional centres in the Almaty Region.
- UNESCO listing: Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its extensive petroglyph ensembles that record millennia of human activity.
Tips for Visiting Tanbaly #
- Go in the cooler hours of morning or late afternoon so the low sun brings out the detail in the petroglyphs and to avoid midday heat on the exposed steppe.
- Hire a local guide from Almaty or the nearest regional town-interpretation and directions at the site are limited, and a guide will point out panels and motifs most visitors miss.
- Plan transport in advance: the petroglyph field is remote and public transport is sparse, so arrange a private transfer or join an organized day trip from Almaty to ensure you have enough time on site.
