Main image

Tanambogo is a small reef islet in the Solomon Islands archipelago, located close to Tulagi and the eastern approaches to Guadalcanal. It is geographically small and low-lying, typical of coral and reef islets in the region.

The islet is primarily notable for its role in the Pacific War: in early August 1942 it was occupied by Japanese forces and became the objective of an amphibious assault by U.S. Marines during the Guadalcanal campaign. Remains and relics from wartime operations are still reported in the area.

Today Tanambogo lies within the maritime landscape between Tulagi and Guadalcanal and is visited chiefly for historical interest and by specialist divers and researchers rather than as a developed tourist destination.

  • Location context: Part of a cluster of small islets close to Tulagi and the eastern approaches to Guadalcanal, often visited by historians and war relic divers.
  • World War II significance: Scene of the August 1942 amphibious assaults when U.S. forces attacked Japanese positions on Gavutu and Tanambogo during the Guadalcanal campaign.
