About Tampaksiring#
Tampaksiring is a temple town in the highlands northeast of Denpasar, in the Gianyar regency of central Bali. It sits in a landscape of forested ravines and rice terraces, and takes its name from a Balinese phrase meaning “slanted foot” - a reference to a legend about the mythical king Mayadenawa.
The town is best known for Tirta Empul, a holy-spring temple founded in the 10th century where Balinese Hindus have long come to bathe in the sacred waters for ritual purification. The spring still bubbles up into a series of stone pools, and the temple remains one of the most active pilgrimage sites on the island. Nearby, carved into a cliff face above the Pakerisan River, stand the rock-cut shrines of Gunung Kawi, a set of monumental candi memorials from the 11th century that count among the finest ancient monuments in Indonesia.
