Archaeological Site Ancient Buddhist archaeological complex with rock-cut stupa
Takht-e Rostam near Samangan comprises rock-cut Buddhist remains and a stucco-painted stupa complex from the early medieval period; visitors come for archaeology and broad valley views.
Takht-e Rostam is a rock-cut Buddhist complex in Samangan Province in northern Afghanistan, notable for a carved stupa and adjoining monastic chambers. The site preserves substantial rock-cut architecture rather than a free-standing temple.
The complex includes a circular stupa hewn from the hill, a carved stairway and a sequence of rooms that served as monastic cells, chapels and service spaces. It illustrates the presence of Buddhist monastic communities in the region before the Islamic period.
Archaeological study attributes the site’s principal construction and use to the late antique period, broadly from the 4th to the 7th centuries CE, after which Buddhist institutions in the area declined. Surveys and descriptions emphasize the carved architecture and its vulnerability to erosion and later disturbance.
The complex is set into a low hill in Samangan Province in northern Afghanistan; it is an inland archaeological site rather than a coastal landmark.
- Dating: Archaeological evidence places the main phase of use in the late antique period, roughly the 4th to 7th centuries CE.
