How to Get to Taitung
Taitung is best reached by a short domestic flight to Taitung Airport (TTT) or by Taiwan Railways (TRA) to Taitung Station on the eastern line. The airport is a short taxi/bus ride from the centre; trains and intercity buses provide longer but scenic access from Taipei, Hualien and Kaohsiung.
Taitung Airport (TTT): Taitung Airport is the city’s small domestic airport with regular flights from Taipei (Songshan). From the terminal you can take a metered taxi to Taitung city centre in about 10-15 minutes (taxi roughly NT$150-250 depending on luggage and time of day). There is also a local airport bus/shuttle that connects to the area around Taitung Railway Station - expect a short ride of around 15-25 minutes for approximately NT$30-60.
Taipei Songshan Airport (TSA) (via flight to Taitung): Many visitors fly from Taipei Songshan to Taitung (flight time ~40-50 minutes). Typical one-way fares vary widely by season and advance booking but commonly fall in the NT$2,000-3,500 range for purchased tickets; once at Taitung Airport use the taxi or airport bus above to reach the city centre.
Train: Taitung is served by Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) at Taitung Station on the Eastern Line. Express trains (Puyuma / Tze-Chiang) link Taitung with Hualien and Taipei - travel times are about Hualien → Taitung ~2-3 hours and Taipei → Taitung ~5.5-7 hours depending on service. Fares vary by service and seat class; typical one-way adult fares are roughly Hualien → Taitung NT$200-400 and Taipei → Taitung NT$700-1,000 (book via TRA).
Bus: Long-distance buses (e.g., Kuo-Kuang, UBus and other intercity carriers) run routes to Taitung from cities up and down the west/east coasts - typical Taipei → Taitung bus fares are around NT$400-600 with travel times ~5-7 hours depending on route. Local Taitung city and county buses connect the station, attractions and smaller towns; short city rides generally cost NT$15-30.
How to Get Around Taitung
Taitung is best navigated with a mix of train or bus to arrive and then scooter or rental car to explore the wider county; downtown is compact enough for walking. If you prefer comfort and simplicity, use TRA or a short flight into Taitung Airport and rely on taxis or a hired car for day trips.
- TRA (Train) (NT$200-1,000) - Taitung Station is the hub for Taiwan Railways' Eastern Line. Express services (Puyuma, Tze‑Chiang) are the most comfortable way to reach Taitung from Hualien or Taipei; journeys are scenic but can be long, so reserve seats on busy days. Use the TRA website or app for schedules and seat reservations - discounted fares appear for advance purchases.
- Intercity Bus (NT$400-600) - Several intercity operators (Kuo-Kuang, UBus and other carriers) run direct and indirect routes to Taitung from major cities. Buses are often cheaper than trains and can be competitive on travel time, but services vary by season; overnight buses can save a night's accommodation. Book long-distance tickets in advance for holidays and weekends.
- Taxis & Ride-hailing (NT$100-400) - Metered taxis are convenient for short trips, airport transfers and getting to dispersed attractions; short in-town rides commonly cost NT$100-300. Ride-hailing apps exist in Taiwan but coverage in Taitung is more limited than in Taipei - local taxi dispatch or pre-booking is a reliable option, especially late at night.
- Scooter rental (NT$300-600/day) - Renting a scooter is the most flexible and popular way to explore Taitung and nearby coastlines - many rental shops near the station and downtown. Expect basic scooters to rent for roughly NT$300-600 per day; always carry your international driving permit where required and check insurance/helmet policies. Scooters make short scenic detours and small village access easy but avoid rough weather.
- Car hire (NT$1,500-3,000/day) - Car hire gives the greatest freedom for visiting remote beaches, hot springs and inland trails; pick-up locations are available near the station and airport. Prices typically start higher than scooter rentals (expect roughly NT$1,500-3,000 per day depending on vehicle and season). Consider fuel costs and parking in town; a car is useful if travelling with family or lots of gear.
- Walking - The centre of Taitung is compact and very walkable - strolling is the easiest way to explore the downtown night market, parks and waterfront. Walking pairs well with bike or scooter day trips to further sights. Wear sun protection in summer and comfortable shoes for uneven coastal paths.
