Tainan County
Area Southern Taiwanese county known for historic temples
Around Tainan on Taiwan’s southwest, the former Tainan County area draws visitors to temples, Anping Fort, night markets and strong street-food traditions.
Tainan County was a former administrative county in southern Taiwan that existed as a distinct unit until it merged with Tainan City in 2010. The merger on 25 December 2010 created the present-day special municipality of Tainan.
The area that comprised the former county contains coastal plains, agricultural landscapes and a number of local historic towns and temples. Travelers visit for regional cuisine, temple festivals and coastal scenery rather than for a single landmark.
The county functioned as an administrative division of Taiwan through the 20th century and into the early 21st century until the 2010 unification with Tainan City. After the merger the county ceased to exist as a separate government unit.
Located in southern Taiwan along the island’s southwest coast, the former county surrounded the urban core of Tainan and faced the Taiwan Strait. It lies several hundred kilometres south of Taipei.
