Taï National Park
Park Primary rainforest park protecting endangered species in Ivory Coast
Taï National Park protects one of West Africa’s last primary lowland rainforests and hosts chimpanzees and forest elephants. Researchers and eco-tourists arrive for guided treks, primate tracking and long-distance jungle camping permits.
Taï National Park is a large tract of primary tropical rainforest in southwestern Ivory Coast and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its outstanding biodiversity. The park contains some of the last remaining intact lowland rainforests in West Africa.
The park is valued for dense primary forest, canopy structure, seasonal waterways and wildlife such as chimpanzees and other forest mammals and birds. Scientific research and conservation work are active in the park, and visitors commonly come for guided wildlife viewing and ecological study.
The area was designated for protection in the 20th century and became a national park; it was later inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in recognition of its globally important biodiversity. Research stations have been present for decades to study the park’s ecosystems.
Taï National Park sits in the far southwest of Ivory Coast near the border with Liberia, within Montagnes District, and comprises a large continuous block of rainforest across a rural landscape.
- Access and permits: Visiting usually requires permits and guided entry because the park contains sensitive primary forest and active research sites.
- Biodiversity: The park is internationally recognised for its biodiversity, including populations of West African chimpanzees and many endemic species.
What to See #
- Research stations: On-site research stations and ranger bases that support long-term ecological monitoring and conservation work in the park's core forest areas.
- Core forest areas: Core primary rainforest zones that are largely intact and contain dense canopy, old-growth trees and forest waterways supporting diverse wildlife.
Tips for Visiting Taï National Park #
- Because access is remote and trails are rugged, organize visits through the park authorities or established local guides and camps; independent access is limited and not advised.
- Plan your visit in the dry season (roughly November-April) when trails and river crossings are easier; heavy rains make much of the park inaccessible and slippery.
- Consider contacting the Taï Research Station ahead of time - guided walks from researchers or trained guides greatly increase your chances of seeing wildlife like forest primates and birds.
Best Time to Visit Taï National Park #
Visit during the drier months (November-March) for easier trail access and better wildlife‑viewing opportunities.
