Tahuata
Island Marquesas island with traditional villages and rugged terrain
Tahuata is a small inhabited island in the southern Marquesas Islands of French Polynesia, located close to the larger island of Hiva Oa. The island is volcanic, with steep terrain and small coastal villages.
The principal settlement is Vaitahu, which has the island’s main harbour and community services. The island’s economy is based on subsistence agriculture, fishing and small-scale crafts.
Tahuata has traditional Marquesan culture and historic sites in and around the villages; it is less developed for mass tourism than some larger Polynesian islands. Travel is usually by inter-island boat or local flights to nearby hubs followed by boat transfer.
Geographically the island lies in the southern group of the Marquesas and sits a short distance south of Hiva Oa, forming part of French Polynesia’s scattered volcanic archipelago.
- Main harbour: Vaitahu is the main village and harbour on the island and serves as the usual arrival point for small inter-island boats.
How to Get to Tahuata #
Tahuata is reached by inter-island boat or small plane from the main Marquesan hubs such as Hiva Oa or Nuku Hiva. Sea crossings can be short but are subject to weather; chartered boats or scheduled inter-island services operate irregularly.
