Taebaek Mountains
Mountains Mountain range in eastern Korea with high peaks
A high-range in eastern South Korea with hiking trails, winter snow and small mountain towns like Taebaek; visited for mountain festivals, forest paths and regional mining heritage.
The Taebaek Mountains are a major mountain range running along the eastern side of the Korean peninsula, forming a prominent highland spine in eastern Korea. The range contains numerous peaks and ridges and is an important physical feature of the region.
Hikers use well-established trails to access ridgelines and summits; the highest named peak, Taebaeksan, reaches about 1,567 metres and provides wide views over adjacent provinces. The range plays a role in regional drainage and climate patterns.
Geographically the mountains extend along eastern Korea and pass through parts of modern provinces including North Gyeongsang; they lie inland from the eastern seaboard and are accessible from nearby mountain towns and trailheads.
The Taebaek range is set inland from the Sea of Japan (East Sea) and forms rugged, forested highland terrain above the surrounding lowlands.
- Highest peak: Highest point in the range is approximately 1,567 metres, offering alpine-style scenery and extensive ridge walks in summer and snow-covered terrain in winter.
