How to Get to Taebaek

Taebaek (Gangwon Province) is in a mountainous area best reached by a combination of rail or KTX to the east coast (Gangneung) followed by an intercity bus, or directly by regional train to Taebaek Station. Buses from Gangneung are the most straightforward option if KTX is used for the Seoul→Gangneung leg.

By Air

Yangyang International Airport (YNY): Yangyang has seasonal and limited international flights; if available you can rent a car or take a taxi from Yangyang to Taebaek (journey around 1.5-2 hours depending on roads).

Incheon International Airport (ICN) / Gimpo (GMP): Most international travellers arrive via Seoul (ICN or GMP). From Seoul take KTX or intercity trains to Gangneung, then change to an intercity/local bus to Taebaek; total travel time is typically 3.5-5 hours depending on connections.

By Train & Bus

Train: Taebaek is on the Taebaek/Yeongdong rail corridor with conventional train services at Taebaek Station (regional trains rather than KTX). From Gangneung or Dongdaegu you can reach Taebaek by regional train; check Korail timetables for up‑to‑date services.

Bus: Intercity buses link Taebaek with Gangneung and other Gangwon Province towns. From Gangneung bus terminal the ride to Taebaek is roughly 1-1.5 hours; buses are frequent and a common way to reach the mountain city.

Taebaek is a small mountain city and the centre is quite walkable for sightseeing. Regional buses connect Taebaek to nearby cities (Wonju, Gangneung) and local taxis serve shorter trips.
