Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve is a protected area in Chandrapur district, Maharashtra, India, known for its population of Bengal tigers and other large dry-forest mammals. It combines the Tadoba core park with the surrounding Andhari sanctuary to form one of the state’s principal tiger habitats.

The reserve supports species such as Bengal tiger, Indian leopard, gaur, sloth bear and several deer species, and is popular for guided jeep safaris and wildlife photography. Tourist facilities and safari departures are concentrated at a small number of gates and lodges that serve the reserve.

The area was brought under formal tiger-protection management as part of Project Tiger in the early 1990s and lies roughly 140-160 kilometres southeast of Nagpur, with the town of Chandrapur nearby and Moharli serving as a common entry point for visitors.

  • Tiger reserve: Declared a tiger reserve under India's Project Tiger in the early 1990s, it is one of Maharashtra's best-known protected areas for wild tigers.
  • Visiting: The main visitor access point is the Moharli (also spelled Moharli) gate, from which safari routes into the core forest are run; sightings are most reliable in the dry season from October to June.

What to See #

  • Tadoba core: The Tadoba core area contains the most intensively protected forest and the highest density of tiger sightings; jeep safaris depart into this core from nearby entry points.
  • Andhari sanctuary: Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary functions as the reserve's buffer, comprising forest along the Andhari River and connecting corridors used by large mammals.
