Syvash Bay
Lake Shallow, brackish lagoon separating Crimea from mainland
Syvash Bay comprises shallow lagoons and extensive salt flats between Crimea and the Ukrainian mainland. The area features saline ecology, mudflats important for migratory birds and limited recreational access.
Syvash is a broad system of shallow lagoons, marshes and tidal flats on the northern side of the Crimean Peninsula separating Crimea from the Ukrainian mainland. The waters are characteristically saline and seasonally variable, with extensive mudflats and salt pans.
The area has long been used for salt extraction and reed harvesting, and its shallow, warm brackish waters support specialised flora and fauna. The smell of decaying organic matter in some areas has led to the local nickname “Putrid Sea.”
Syvash has also been a geographic and strategic barrier in regional military history due to its difficult terrain and fluctuating water levels.
The lagoon system lies on the northeastern approach to the Sea of Azov and forms part of the coastal landscape between the Crimean Peninsula and the adjacent mainland regions.
- Shallow saline lagoons: The Syvash system is a network of very shallow, highly saline lagoons and marshes separated from the Sea of Azov by narrow spits and tombolos.
