Syon House
Museum Historic London mansion with Regency interiors
A late-18th-century estate in Brentford, Syon House attracts visitors for Robert Adam interiors, Capability Brown gardens and guided tours that trace aristocratic life, art and landscape design.
Syon House is a historic country house and estate on the north bank of the River Thames at Isleworth, west London, serving as the London seat of the Dukes of Northumberland. The present house is best known for interiors by architect Robert Adam and extensive 18th-century landscape works.
The principal attractions are the Adam-designed state rooms, decorative plasterwork and the long gallery, together with parkland and formal gardens remodelled in the 18th century. The property is run as a historic house with public tours, temporary exhibitions and event hire, and is frequently used as a film and television location.
The site originated as the medieval Syon Abbey; after the Dissolution the estate passed through several owners and was rebuilt in its present form in the mid 18th century under the Percy family. Robert Adam’s interior scheme and contemporary landscaping by Capability Brown-era designers define much of the house’s current appearance.
Syon House sits in the London Borough of Hounslow, a short drive from central London and adjacent to suburban Isleworth and the Thames towpath; the nearest Underground stations are several miles east, with local rail and road connections serving visitors.
