Symi

Symi is a small Greek island in the Dodecanese group, administered within the South Aegean region. The island is noted for its compact harbour and concentration of neoclassical houses fronting a sheltered bay.

The harbour area features tightly packed waterfront buildings, a central pier for ferries and a stepped climb to the upper town, with numerous small beaches and coves within short boat distances. Visitors also use the island as a base for swimming, snorkeling and short coastal excursions by caique or water taxi.

Symi has a long maritime and agricultural history under various regional powers; the modern harbour settlement expanded in the 19th century with prosperity from sponge fishing and trade. • Gialos (harbour): Sits around a horseshoe-shaped harbour with waterfront neoclassical townhouses and a concentration of shops, tavernas and boat operators, forming the island's principal port and arrival point.
• Chorio (Chora): Traditional hillside settlement above the harbour with narrow streets, stacked houses and several viewpoints over the bay that form the island's main residential core.
• Panormitis Monastery: Seaside monastery and pilgrimage site on the island's southern coast known for its church and maritime traditions, reachable by road or small boat from the main harbour.
