High / low are average daily temperatures (°C). “Feels” reflects how hot or cold it feels, allowing for humidity.
Southern Sweden (Skåne & Blekinge)
Midwinter days are short but not extreme: temperatures often sit around −5 to +3°C depending on sea influence, and nights can be chilly. If a real winter arrives there will be picturesque snow cover around the countryside and coastal frosts, but long stretches of thaw are common. It’s an atmospheric time for slow travel-bring warm socks, gloves and layers, and check opening hours during the holiday period.
West Coast & Gothenburg (Bohuslän, Halland)
The end of winter brings lengthening days and anticipation of spring-temperatures slowly creep up, bringing a few milder pockets that feel especially pleasant after a long season. March can still deliver heavy rain and windy days, so waterproofs and flexibility remain important. This is a fine time to explore smaller coastal museums and off-season harbors before the summer rush begins.
Stockholm & the Baltic East Coast (Stockholm archipelago, Gotland, Öland)
Midwinter brings the shortest days and the possibility of beautiful snowy scenes across the islands and in Stockholm’s parks; auroras are very rare this far south but clear nights are crisp. Ice conditions vary: inner inlets may freeze while main shipping lanes remain open, so check local notices before planning sea trips. This is a restful season for museums and restaurants-bring warm clothes and patience for shorter daylight hours.
Central Sweden - Lakes, Forests and Highlands (Dalarna, Småland, Värmland)
The end of winter feels hopeful as snow retreats from lower valleys and streams swell with melt-late March and April can be muddy and unpredictable. Trails reopen gradually and early-season hiking is possible at lower elevations while higher areas remain snowy. Pack gaiters or waterproof boots for muddy tracks and be prepared for both winter and spring conditions on the same day.
Northern Sweden - Lapland, Mountains and the Norrland Coast (Kiruna, Abisko, Åre, Luleå)
The end of winter brings rapid daylight gains and, in coastal pockets like Luleå, early signs of thaw; inland and at altitude snow can remain deep through April. Spring skiing is possible in high resorts and early-season boat trips begin to spring up as ice breaks in coastal bays. Layering is essential-expect cold mornings and strong sun on snow-plus some muddy conditions where melt runs off into boreal wetlands.
