Swansea Castle is a medieval castle ruin in the centre of Swansea, Wales, originally founded in the early 12th century as a Norman fortification. It sits within the city’s historic Castle Square and survives today only as fragments of the medieval fabric.
The site is small in scale and most visible elements are sections of curtain wall and masonry incorporated into later buildings around the square. Interpretive panels on site point out the former castle footprint and the location of the gatehouse.
The castle was established by the Normans in the 12th century and was rebuilt in stone in later medieval centuries. Over the 18th and 19th centuries parts of the structure were adapted for civic uses such as a courthouse and prison and much of the complex was demolished or altered.
The ruins lie in Swansea city centre, close to the River Tawe and shopping streets. Cardiff is roughly 45 miles to the east by road.
- Location tip: Remains are concentrated around Castle Square, adjacent to the city centre and close to Swansea Museum.
